Oregon Volleyball Sweep Arizona Wildcats in Straight Sets
The 11th ranked Oregon Ducks defeated the Arizona Wildcats, 25-17, 25-12, 25-19, Wednesday at Matthew Knight Arena.
The Story: The Ducks dominated from start to finish. Coming off of a great win on the road against USC (3-1), Senior Serena Warner said, “the team really wanted to come out with high intensity and high energy from the very first serve.”
The Ducks stayed ahead the entire time in the first two sets and instantly gained control in the third securing the victory. The first set was full of hard earned points by both teams, as the Ducks finished the set with a hitting percentage of .170 compared to Arizona’s .021. The Ducks outshined the rest of the game with thirteen kills each in the last two sets. They had no errors in the second hitting the .448 mark and only three errors in the third.
Coach Jim Moore was encouraged with how the team played as a unit offensively and defensively.
“This might be the first match all year where everyone on the floor had a real good demeanor,” said Moore. “Everybody looked like they were fighting for everyone else. It was really good stuff.”
The Ducks now have back-to-back wins against ranked opponents putting themselves at 6-3 in the conference while Arizona falls to 5-4.
Stars of the Day: Liz Brenner and Martenne Bettendorf both led the team with eleven kills each for the game. Bettendorf came out with six kills just in the first set while Brenner followed with the same in the second. This will be Brenner’s 13th time reaching double digits in the season adding to her kills with ten digs.
Although Brenner was excited about the win she now puts her focus on the games ahead. “We’ll have practice tomorrow,” said Brenner. “I think if we come out how we did today and start attacking from the very beginning we’ll be just fine against Arizona State.”
Coming Up: Oregon looks to keep their momentum going as they take on No.18 Arizona State on Friday at 4 p.m. The game will be broadcasted by the Pac-12 networks.
