Thank You, Marcus Mariota
Every so often, someone comes along whose very nature causes a widespread ripple effect. In this case, the source of that effect stemmed from none other than Marcus Mariota. The 2015 second round NFL draft pick is traveling cross country to become a Tennessee Titan. Last Thursday, GoDucks.com (Oregon’s main athletic website) released a dedication feature, in which every Oregon sport shared a “Thank You” to Marcus for his time spent at the university.
The feature showcased what I call the “Mariota Effect”, highlighting the humility, leadership, and success represented by the Heisman Trophy winner, which overflowed into the university, the community, and the nation. Marcus left Oregon with 135 touchdowns covering over 13,000 yards and over 40 awards and honors, including Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year (2014) and the Polynesian College Player of the Year (2014).
Mariota assured the Titans he will be bringing his best to the Volunteer State. “I'll continue to be the player I've always been, and do whatever's asked of me. Coach Whisenhunt's going to have his offense and the complexities of his system, and I'm going to do my best to execute it,” Marcus said in a conference call with Titans reporters.
It is clear that wherever the road may take him, the impact he creates will be felt by all those around him. Now to continue his legendary football story with a new team, on behalf of the entire Duck community, it is only suitable to tip our hats and say “Thank You, Marcus”.
